The popular daytime TV drama Doctors will feature one of its programmes next year on a speed awareness course after consulting Shropshire’s TTC Group for advice.

The UK’s leading driver trainers, which puts on speed awareness courses on behalf of police across the country, were asked by researchers for information on how the courses are presented so that they could be recreated for the TV series.

Filming went ahead in November and the programme will broadcast on March 19 at 1.45pm.

Simon Curtis, BBC researcher for Doctors said that they certainly took on board all the helpful information from TTC Group.

Alan Prosser, TTC Group’s manager of the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme (NDORS), was given the opportunity to comment on the programme script. He told TV researchers how the course was a positive experience for attenders with fully trained staff delivering the workshop.

“Mystery shoppers” sometimes attend to ensure consistent standards are upheld. The courses are held from a variety of venues including professional business parks, hotels, and purpose built training centres.

Service providers such as the TTC Group deliver the schemes for police after going through a competitive tendering process.

Clients need to fully participate to the best of their ability, make a positive contribution and demonstrate a willingness to improve their speed awareness skills and knowledge, said Mr Prosser.

After an introduction and outline of the course ethos, clients may be asked what caused them to speed. They hear that latest figures from the DfT reveal that a 30mph impact carries a fatality risk to a pedestrian of 8 per cent which increases four times if the impact speed is 40 mph.

If someone fails to complete the course successfully, they are referred back to police who decide on further action which is normally to withdraw the fixed penalty and prosecute.

The TTC Group, of Hadley Park, Telford, also put on courses for drink drive offenders and Driving4Change courses for people who commit minor traffic infringements with the aim of reducing deaths and injuries by educating drivers – many who have forgotten the rules of the road.

TTC Automotive, part of the TTC Group, of Hadley Park, Telford, run courses for drivers who need to get their Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) certificate as required under EU law to drive vehicles over 7.5 tonnes. They also manage business vehicles and drivers to promote safety, reduce running costs and meet legal requirements.
