A new sewing business in Shrewsbury is opening for people looking to learn sewing skills in a flexible way. Rather than traditional weekly courses, Space to Sew will offer a flexible sewing club and short courses.

Shrewsbury sewing business is tailor-made for busy lifestyles

The company is celebrating the launch with a week of free taster sessions for people to sample Shrewsbury’s newest approach to sewing.

Tutors at Space to Sew on Swan Hill in Shrewsbury will be teaching a range of sewing skills from couture dressmaking to home furnishings and specialist techniques. The concept is based on the popular trend for Sewing Clubs springing up around the country, as more and more people look to save money by learning how to make bespoke clothes and home furnishings.

Domini Lucas, who founded the business said: “Having attended a Sewing Club previously where I could learn from tutors as often or little as I wanted, I know this flexible way to learn works so much better for those of us balancing busy lifestyles. Usually sewing courses require between six and eleven weekly sessions – we will provide short courses from half a day to two days, including Saturdays, and regular club sessions which members can attend as and when they like to work on whatever item they want help with.

“So many of us have good intentions about sewing, but lack the time to commit to a regular course or the space at home to spread out. Space to Sew will allow people to learn in a way that suits them and provide that elusive space to spread out so many of us lack at home.”

Domini added: “We’ve been thrilled at the support so far. We’ve been busy finding out people’s thoughts on the concept and where it needs to be adapted to make sure we’re offering what people want. We want Space to Sew to become just that – a space where everyone is welcome to learn to sew whatever they want in a friendly environment.”

Forthcoming courses are already filling up fast, including couture dressmaking techniques and training on specialist skills such as inserting zips.

To celebrate the launch, Space to Sew is offering free taster sessions on 28 and 29 February and 3 March in making bags, cushions, fascinators and sewing club taster sessions where people can bring their own projects to get advice. Tea and cake will be on hand to aid creativity.

To find out more or book a free taster session contact Domini Lucas at Space to Sew on 01743 588595 or visit www.spacetosew.co.uk.
