"Slip and trip" claim culture sees launch of new Telford company
A new “slip testing” company has been launched in Telford following a boom in the “slip and trip” claim culture.
Anti-slip Ltd has been set up by David Stevenson and his mother Christine at their base on Tweedale Industrial Estate.
Mr Stevenson said they now had equipment which allowed them to carry out pendulum slip testing which then gave the customer the slip resistance value of the road or floor surface.
One of their first projects was to assess the slip-resistance of the London Underground as transport chiefs had received an increasing number of incidents where people had injured themselves.
He said the test could be carried out and if it fell below a standard resistance level the floor covering, regardless of the size of the area, can be recovered.
Mr Stevenson, 32, said the venture also included a 24-hour on-line shop offering anti-slip and non-slip vinyls which had already proved very popular with orders from all over the world.
He said the UK was “steps ahead of other countries” when it came to health and safety so their products were very much sought after as they could not be bought in their own country.
He said: “If someone has an accident which involved a trip or a slip, we can go to the site of the accident and do the test and tell them the exact resistance value of the surface.
“This could prove invaluable in any future court cases as the number of claims from trips and slips increases year on year.”
A recent project undertaken by Anti-slip Ltd involved a shopping centre in Stoke as centre bosses had also had reports of people slipping over.
Mr Stevenson said the anti-slip floor coverings they made after conducting the tests were bespoke and had become very popular in both private homes and also in schools.
“The safety of children in schools and customers visiting shops or visitor attractions is of paramount importance and prevention is always the best option.
“By conducting the test in advance we can prevent any accidents which may occur if people do not realise how dangerous the current floor covering is,” he said.
