A Shrewsbury woman who is one of the world’s leading female triathletes in her age group is preparing for a challenging cycle ride which will take her across three countries in three days.

Legal assistant Barb Somers (59), of Cressage, who works in the commercial department of Wace Morgan Solicitors in Belmont, is competing in the event, organised by Severn Hospice, from September 7.

She is one of a group of 30 people will ride around 170 miles across part of France, Belgium and the Netherlands in aid of the charity.

Barb, who has been competing in triathlons for the last six years and has a successful record in national and international events, said that she was training hard for the ‘North Sea Cycle Challenge’.

“I am a keen cyclist but have never done this distance before. I am really looking forward to it and am hoping to raise around £2,000 for the hospice,” she said.

Her colleagues at Wace Morgan are sponsoring her to the tune of £200 and clients Shropshire Homes have also donated £200 to her fund.

Howard Thorne, managing director of Shropshire Homes, said that he was delighted to be able to support Barb, who carries out conveyancing work on his properties.

“If she is as quick to finish the cycle challenge as she is to complete my work then she will be absolutely fine!” he quipped.

Managing partner of Wace Morgan Diana Packwood said that the firm was happy to provide sponsorship for such a worthy cause.

She commented: “The Severn Hospice provides an invaluable service to people in Shropshire so we are pleased to be able to make a contribution to its funds thanks to Barb’s efforts.”
