Work by Telford & Wrekin Council to improve access routes in Oakengates has finished five weeks early with work to open upper Market Street to through traffic now complete.

Regeneration leaps ahead in Oakengates

Regeneration work started in Oakengates in February as part of the Council’s Borough Towns Development programme, with the aim of improving the centre of Oakengates as a key town centre for the local community.

Oakengates has benefited from £1.3m investment which has been spent on improving access and traffic flow in and around the area to help to boost local trade, improve pedestrian access and providing on street parking in the centre of Oakengates.

The Council has worked with Oakengates Town Council and a working group involving local traders to develop the proposals that have been implemented.

This third phase of the works has followed the recent success of improved access and additional parking in upper Market Street. Market street is now completely open to through traffic with a new entrance off Stafford Road, by opening the road up to traffic it is hoped more people will choose to visit the centre of Oakengates.

Work is now progressing in Oxford Street where more parking bays and high quality paving are being laid down. This final phase of the works is due for completion by the end of October.

Councillor Richard Overton, Deputy Leader with special responsibility for Borough Towns Development and Policy, said: “ I am extremely pleased that the work has been carried out and completed ahead of schedule. I hope that traders will now be able to see the positive results of the new access routes in and around Oakengates. I hope that the final part of the regeneration programme will continue to progress at a steady pace and will complement the good work that has already been achieved.”
