Telford & Wrekin Council has joined forces with local business Lil Missy in Donnington to provide training courses for young people aged 16-18 years currently not in education or training.

Cutting edge programme to train and gain in Telford

To launch its recruitment campaign, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Turnaround project which is backed by the European Social Fund and Lil Missy Salon Academy are hosting a free taster day on Tuesday 16 October from 10am–3pm.

Following the free taster day, a full training course will begin a week later where young people with an interest in hair and beauty will be able to start attending a one day per week course at the academy to study the tricks of the trade.

Young people who sign up to the programme will also receive support from the Council’s Turnaround project that in addition will also provide the young people involved with one day a week workshops focusing on boosting employability and life skills.

Outstanding candidates will be given the opportunity to progress onto a level one or two NVQ course funded by the Lil Missy Academy.

The Turnaround Project works with partners such as the Education Development Service, Telford College of Arts and Technology and training provider Wyldwoods to deliver confidence building, essential life skills and employability training for young people aged 16-18 years old.

The project is funded by the ESF and aims to help young people fulfil their potential by giving them better skills and better job prospects.

To date, more than 60% of the young people involved in the Turnaround Project have gone on to successfully secure work or continue their education.

Young people who would like to sign up should contact the Turnaround Project Team on 01952 388830 or email turnaround@telford.gov.uk for more information.

Councillor Kuldip Sahota, leader for Telford & Wrekin Council said: “Working co-operatively with local businesses, Telford & Wrekin Council is working extremely hard to boost employability and training opportunities for young people.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for young people across the borough to learn a practical skill that will lead into future employment or education.

“We are always looking to team up with the private sector to increase opportunities for young people and I would like to personally thank Lil Missy for working with us to provide what I am sure will be a successful and positive programme that will help inspire many young people.”

Peter Dennis, MD of Lil Missy Academy, Said: “The hair and beauty business is a vibrant, exciting and rewarding industry. By working in partnership with ESF and Telford & Wrekin Council. The Lil Missy Group now has the possibility to offer local young people a fantastic insight into our industry. Learners will benefit from an interactive learning experience, based solely around a "real world " working environment.

“We aim to give learners, regardless of their previous experiences or qualifications. A foundation in the employability skills, knowledge and experience to succeed and flourish in the hair and beauty industry.”
