Shropshire construction firm wins another top national award
A Shropshire construction firm has won another top national award for building the world’s most eco friendly dog rescue centre.

McPhillips (Wellington), a leading regional civil engineering and building contractor, won Project of the Year for the £5.25 million Dogs Trust Shrewsbury development in the Constructing Excellence National Awards 2012 – its seventh award for the outstanding development.
The Telford company flew the flag for the West Midlands region at the gathering of all the UK’s regional event finalists, winning top prize in front of more than 450 construction industry figures at the sixth annual awards ceremony held at the Tower Hotel, London, on November 30.
The award was presented to the project team which had shown the highest level of technical achievement, innovation and application of best practice while delivering a project to time and budget and team working throughout the supply chain.
They had already received the Project of the Year title in the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence (WMCCE) awards in the Summer.
A long established family firm with almost half a century of construction experience, McPhillips is involved in civil engineering and building projects across the Midlands, North West and Wales.
Dogs Trust Shrewsbury was a major re-development of an existing Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre which was transformed into one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the world. It was adopted by the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence as a construction industry best practice demonstration project.
The world’s foremost building sustainability rating organisation – BREEAM, awarded the centre their top ‘Outstanding’ certification and the highest post construction rating of over 200,000 BREEAM assessed buildings worldwide. In addition to WMCCE’s Project of the Year, the Dogs Trust Shrewsbury development had already won a BREEAM 2012 award, Green Apple Gold Award and been Highly Commended by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
Designed by Shrewsbury based Napier and Company and opened in August 2011 by Mark Pritchard MP, Dogs Trust Shrewsbury offers cutting edge animal welfare facilities for its canine inhabitants as well as its staff. It was designed to reduce energy costs by 70 per cent in comparison to a traditional rehoming centre through use of Passivhaus airtightness and ventilation principles, subterranean buildings, recycled insulation, solar PV, biomass boiler, district heating system, water recycling and green roofs.
McPhillips’ Marketing Manager Mark Kiddie said: “When the client, principal contractor, supply chain and design team integrate and work as well together as we did at Dogs Trust Shrewsbury, the results speak for themselves. Dogs Trust’s aspiration and vision for the centre was inspiring and Constructing Excellence’s involvement enabled the team to focus on key measurable deliverables of integration and collaboration, sustainability and customer satisfaction.”
McPhillips are a leading Midlands based building and civil engineering contractor with an annual turnover around £30m, undertaking projects up to £10m. Established in 1963, the company is a traditional family business owned and operated by brothers Nicholas and Peter McPhillips.
The company employs its own staff and workforce of more than 230 personnel enabling it to invest in training and maintain close control over resourcing, workmanship and health and safety.
Projects such as Dogs Trust Shrewsbury put McPhillips at the forefront of sustainable building. With their experience as award winning specialists in the construction of animal welfare facilities, they have recently completed a second £7.45m Dogs Trust rehoming centre in Loughborough. With their combination of both civil engineering and construction skills, McPhillips work across industrial, commercial, health, education, defence and leisure sectors.
Recent completed schemes include Telford College of Arts & Technology’s new £1m Construction Training Centre, Wrekin Housing Trust’s £6.7m Parkwood Extracare facility in Telford and a £1.3m factory and office refurbishment for Less Common Metals in Ellesmere Port.
A £4m engineering and infrastructure work for the redevelopment of the Southwater area of Telford Town Centre has also just been completed along with £3.3m of new bridge and access roads for Tesco in Stourport and the £2.8m infrastructure required for a Taylor Wimpey residential development in Coventry.
