RMP Group win Olympic mascots to tour borough schools to teach road safety
A Shropshire company will be bringing a taste of the London 2012 Olympic games to schools in a bid to teach youngsters about safety.
Wenlock and Mandeville will be joining RMP Events own team of mascots for the lessons on road safety and not talking to strangers.
The whacky characters were secured by the Telford firm after bosses bid for an authentic piece of Olympic memorabilia at a charity auction run by Telford & Wrekin Council.
And Trevor Bate, CEO of the RMP Group on Stafford Park 12, said they were delighted to have won the bid for the two mascots.
Money raised at the auction, which had nearly 45 lots, will go towards the Caring for the Future appeal run by the mayor of Telford and Wrekin, Councillor Kevin Guy.
The appeal is raising money for hi-tech facilities at the new women and children’s unit at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.
Mr Bate said: “When we heard about the auction and the mascots going under the hammer we knew we had to bid for them. We thought they would be ideal for us.
“We are now hoping to send the Olympic mascots into local schools to teach the young children about road safety and about how they should not talk to strangers.
“These are important things for youngsters to learn about but it’s also vital that they learn in a fun way.
“That way they are more likely to remember the messages and know what to do when they need to cross the road and will hopefully do it in a safe way remembering what the mascots taught them.
“We are hoping that Wenlock and Mandeville will be a real asset to RMP Events. They’re certainly unique and I can’t wait to see the children’s faces when they meet them.
“They will join the other mascots we already have as part of our expanding events business.”
