Shropshire company helps Yorkshire restaurant with its waste management

A specialist Yorkshire fish and chip restaurant has seen a 45 percent reduction in its waste and rubbish disposal costs with help from the product supplied by a Shropshire company.

Shropshire company helps Yorkshire restaurant with its waste management

Established in October 2011, Rotherham based Whitby’s fish and chip restaurant is open seven days a week, 363 days a year and has 65 full and part-time employees, looking after 166 covers on the premises as well as a takeaway service for customers. In August 2012 the company purchased a BP 11 bin press from Agritel Ltd, a supplier of industrial packaging materials and environmental management equipment to businesses throughout the UK.

Explaining how the relationship with Agritel came about and the impact on Whitby’s, restaurant manager Darren Richards, said: “As a strategic business decision we rely on word-of-mouth and recommendation to promote the restaurant, so initially, until the process took off, our bins weren’t utilised to their full capacity. However, Whitby’s’ rapid rise in popularity meant that quite quickly we were filling 13 bins with rubbish per week. Looking for a solution we searched online and found the BP11 from Agritel, which is now used to crush rubbish bags in the 1100 litre bins holding the waste material. We are charged on the number emptied, known as uplift, and per kilo weight of each bin. Therefore, decreasing the number of collections to three bins for general rubbish and two bins for recycled paper materials twice a week has in turn, reduced our waste disposal costs by 45 percent, staff time allocated to overseeing the process and diesel used by the trucks making the collections! In addition, this saving will allow us to pay for the bin press out right in just over a year and we will be looking to purchase another one when Whitby’s opens up its new Doncaster restaurant this month.”

“Agritel’s BP 11 bin press, which has a compaction ratio of three to one, is fast becoming a popular investment for businesses wanting to reduce not only their costs but also their carbon footprint and environmental impact”, said John Duffus, MD at Agritel. “We are selling a number of them to traditional restaurants, fast food outlets and caravan parks but they are suitable at any business location where 1100 litre bins are regularly filled with disposable rubbish and recyclable paper waste.”
