More needs to be done to tackle stereotypes about Autism in the community, according to a Shropshire care company.

Shropshire care company launches scheme to tackle Autism stereotypes

To mark World Autism Awareness Day today, Shrewsbury-based Adelphi Care Services, which supports adults with Autism, Asperger’s and learning disabilities, is launching a free training initiative to educate people about the disorder.

“This is a chance for us to effect a change towards Autism by educating the general public and those with a general interest in Autism at a basic level,” said Joe Kwaterski, business development director at Adelphi Care Services.

“The training will run throughout 2013 and is aimed at everyone from parents and carers to those on the spectrum.’’

Mr Kwaterski said Adelphi Care Services, based at Longbow Professional Centre, wanted to do something significant to coincide with the sixth annual World Autism Awareness Day.

“The day was agreed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 and the objective is to bring the world’s attention to Autism, a pervasive disorder that affects tens of millions of people.

“The general public do not always understand Autism and how to support people with the condition in the community. There is a lot we can do to help support and enable people with Autism to live well,” Mr Kwaterski said.

Flyers with information about the training will be delivered to all GP practices in Shropshire as well as libraries, dentists, police stations, CAB offices, churches, hospitals and local council offices.
Mr Kwaterski said: “We are offering free autism awareness training to people in Shropshire, in order to reach the greatest number of interested parties.

“The training will be three to four hours in length and will take place at Adelphi’s head office training facility in Shrewsbury.

“We will give consideration to other venues depending on circumstances.”

Anyone interested in finding out more should either contact Louise, training officer; Wendy, office manager or Nicola, administrator at Adelphi Care Services by calling (01743) 465299, e-mail admin@adelphicareservices.
