Shropshire entrepreneur launches premium tea brand

House of Kolze, a new premium tea company founded by Shrewsbury local, Mathew James, has just launched with a Limited First Edition English Breakfast Ceylon Tea, as well as a promise to change how we think about our daily brew.

Born from a passion for tea and deep appreciation for Sri Lankan culture, House of Kolze introduces its unique ‘Tea and Time’ concept, acknowledging that different moments in our daily lives call for different tea experiences. The company’s launch product is sourced exclusively from the prestigious Dimbula growing region of Sri Lanka - which is renowned for the quality of its tea.

“Tea has a somewhat outdated image and reputation," says founder Mathew James. “Over the past 20 years coffee has become an artisan product and craft drink served in cool coffee shops, whilst tea has largely remained a poor relation.  While we cherish tea’s traditions and heritage, we're bringing this beloved beverage firmly into the 21st century, with a promise of a craft tea that sits alongside people’s lifestyles. This is our ‘Tea and Time’ philosophy”

The debut tea has a very limited production run of only 2,000 boxes, and is a ‘high grown’ Ceylon tea, cultivated in the scenic Bogawantalawa Valley of Sri Lanka and sourced from one of the region's most sought-after gardens. ‘High grown’ means it is grown at high elevation and from the best tea leaves. The cooler climate and slower growth at high altitudes enhance the essential oils in the leaves, contributing to the distinct freshness and complexity of the tea.

Mathew continues: “The exceptional provenance of our first English Breakfast Tea showcases the finest that Sri Lanka has to offer, and ensures a wonderful cup of tea brought to the people of Shropshire and beyond.”

Operating from its Shrewsbury base, House of Kolze serves customers nationwide through its website, while actively seeking partnerships with local cafes, restaurants, and hotels. This dual approach aims to make premium Ceylon tea accessible to both individual consumers and local businesses.

Drawing on his extensive experience in brand development, Mathew has created House of Kolze to make a meaningful impact in the premium tea market while sharing his passion for exceptional tea with others.

The company's launch tea is available now at houseofkolze.com.
