After two decades touring the globe with some of music's biggest names, former guitar technician and production manager Alex "Big Al" Harris is swapping stadium lights for the charm of a North Shropshire market town.

Former roadie to the stars launches new music shop in Wem

Harris, who worked with bands like The Waterboys, Slade, The Futureheads, and The Levellers, has announced the grand opening of Big Al's Music Emporium, an independent music shop set to become a hub for musicians across the region.

Specialising in guitars and basses, Big Al's will cater to musicians of all levels, from budding beginners to seasoned professionals. The shop will stock a wide array of instruments, accessories, and consumables designed to suit every budget. Beyond retail, Big Al's Music Emporium will also offer essential instrument repairs and servicing, providing a much-needed local resource for the musical community.

"It’s been a dream of mine for many years to own and operate an independent music shop," said Alex "Big Al" Harris. He emphasized the importance of a physical presence for musicians in an increasingly digital world. "Music retail has become dominated by online giants, but I feel it’s really important for musicians to have a place to buy supplies and get advice in a face-to-face setting."

Harris expressed his enthusiasm for his chosen location, highlighting Wem's vibrant atmosphere. "Wem is a lovely town with lots to offer on its thriving high street, including pubs, cafés, independent retailers, and the excellent town hall. It’s easy to get to, and as a local, it’s the perfect place for me to build my business."

Big Al's Music Emporium is scheduled to open its doors to the public on Friday, July 4, 2025, at 10b High Street, Wem.
