Shrewsbury Festival Chorus to perform ‘Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius’

‘Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius’ will be performed by Shrewsbury Festival Chorus – formed by Shrewsbury Choral and Shrewsbury Cantata Choir in a collaborative concert at Shrewsbury Abbey on Saturday 29th June.

Members of the  Shrewsbury-based choirs, Shrewsbury Choral and Shrewsbury Cantata Choir have once again joined forces to contribute to the town’s annual Music Festival event for Shrewsbury.

The event was the brainchild of Dr Martin Cook, Conductor and Musical Director of Shrewsbury Choral and the June concert will be directed by Andrew Coupe the Director of Music for the Cantata Choir.

The Shrewsbury Festival Chorus will be accompanied by the Shrewsbury Sinfonia, led by Ann Tuplin and prestigious soloists: Soprano – Katie Trethewey; Tenor – William Smith; and Bass; Peter Edge.

Jenny Worley, Chair of Shrewsbury Choral said: “This magnificent work composed by Edward Elgar is most appreciated by music-lovers and Shrewsbury Abbey provides the ideal ambience for this work, which is in two parts relating to the journey of a pious man’s soul and to text from a famous poem by John Henry Newman. Beautiful music, accomplished choirs and splendid orchestral music will be the ideal combination for a most enjoyable evening.”

Tickets for the performance are available online now via shrewsburychoral.org.uk/buytickets, Pengwern Books, Fish Street or on the door on the night.
