Wellington born singer reflects on 30 years since “You’re Gorgeous” hit

Wellington-born singer Stephen Jones is marking 30 years since Babybird’s breakthrough hit You’re Gorgeous, a song that helped define British alternative pop in the mid-1990s and continues to resonate with listeners today.

Although Stephen was born in Wellington, he has few memories of living in Shropshire. His family moved away when he was very young, after his father took up a teaching position overseas.

“I lived in Wellington because my Dad taught at the school there,” Stephen recalls. “When I was four my parents went to New Zealand on a boat as they had a teaching job there. Four years later we came back and I circumferenced the world, which kind of took away my memories of Telford!”

Music became a central focus for Stephen as he grew older, inspired by the sounds of bands such as The Stranglers and Joy Division. Determined to create music of his own, he eventually formed Babybird in Sheffield. What began as a lo-fi solo project soon developed into a fully-fledged band, earning critical attention for its sharp lyrics and distinctive sound.

Babybird’s defining moment arrived in 1996 with the release of the album Ugly Beautiful. The record spawned You’re Gorgeous a single that climbed to the UK Top 3 and became the band’s signature song. Three decades on, its popularity shows no sign of fading.

“It’s never really gone away,” Stephen says. “Someone told me they heard it on the radio only yesterday, which isn’t unusual. It’s a song I’m proud of because it has a double meaning. It’s brilliant for me because it means I can carry on doing music – it was quite a nice financial thing as well!”

Stephen continues to write and release new material, regularly sharing music with his followers online. Meanwhile, Babybird remain an active live act, still drawing audiences eager to hear both the hits and deeper cuts from their catalogue.

This summer, fans will have the chance to see the band live when Babybird appear at The Brit Fest in Cheshire in July – a reminder that, 30 years on, You’re Gorgeous and the career it launched are still very much alive.
