Severn Valley Railway welcomes back Railway 200’s Inspiration exhibition

The ‘brilliant’ and free-to-visit Railway 200 Inspiration exhibition train is returning to the Severn Valley Railway for a special visit from Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 May, giving families and young people another chance to step inside this unique and immersive experience.

More than 70,000 people have already explored Inspiration during its 60-stop, year-long tour of Britain, with nine out of ten visitors saying they would recommend it to a friend. Now, as it approaches the end of its nationwide journey, the exhibition train is making a rare second visit to the Severn Valley Railway, where its tour first began in June 2025.

Located at the SVR’s Kidderminster Town station, Inspiration offers an exhibition quite unlike any other. Co-curated with the National Railway Museum, it brings together rare artefacts, surprising stories and fascinating facts to show how railways transformed the world. Visitors can discover how the railway reshaped towns and cities, revolutionised travel and trade, and even helped standardise time itself. There are hands-on engineering challenges to tackle, interactive displays to explore and a whistle-stop introduction to some of the more unexpected, and lesser-known, careers on today’s railways, designed to spark curiosity in the next generation.

Visitors have described the train as “unique”, “extremely interesting” and “really well curated”, praising its mix of heritage, innovation and family-friendly fun. During its epic journey, Inspiration has travelled thousands of miles across Britain, from Scotland to Southampton, captivating audiences of all ages along the way.

Gus Dunster, managing director of the Severn Valley Railway, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to secure a rare second visit from Inspiration as it approaches the end of its remarkable journey around the UK. It proved incredibly popular when it launched its nationwide tour here at the Severn Valley Railway last June, and we know there will be huge excitement about its return. Its visit this May coincides perfectly with the half-term holiday, offering a fantastic opportunity for families and young people to come to the SVR and experience this inspiring and thought-provoking exhibition train for themselves.”

Emma Roberts, Programme Manager for Railway 200, said: “The wonderful Severn Valley Railway was the first stop on Inspiration’s tour and we are hugely excited to return.

“Since that visit in June 2025, Inspiration has been explored by more than 70,000 people and has travelled the length and breadth of Britain, from the Scottish Highlands to the south coast. We can’t wait to welcome visitors aboard in Kidderminster.”

Inspiration is part of Railway 200, the national celebration marking two centuries of the modern railway. Throughout 2025, thousands of events have celebrated a British innovation that revolutionised travel, supercharged economies and opened up new opportunities for work, leisure and mass tourism.

Entry to the Inspiration exhibition train at the Severn Valley Railway is free, but visitors must book a timed slot in advance at svr.co.uk, as availability is limited. Local schools will also be invited to take part in free, bespoke tours. The exhibition train will be located at Kidderminster Town station from Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 May.

Inspiration tours until June 2026. It is supported by a £250,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with Porterbrook funding its striking, eye-catching livery.
