A villainous vibe: TADLOP flips the script with ‘Twisted’

Forget everything you think you know about the "Street Rat" and the magic lamp. This April, the Telford and District Light Operatic Players (TADLOP) are bringing a wickedly sharp, hilariously irreverent perspective to the stage with their latest production, Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier.

Taking place at The Centenary Theatre within the grounds of Wrekin College, this isn't your typical pantomime; it is a raunchy, clever, and tuneful reimagining of a classic tale that finally gives the "villain" his moment in the spotlight.

A New Perspective on a Classic Tale

Inspired by the cult-hit musical from StarKid Productions, Twisted serves as a brilliant parody of both Disney’s Aladdin and the Broadway powerhouse Wicked.

The story follows Ja’Far, the long-suffering Royal Vizier, as he navigates a kingdom filled with incompetence, a spoiled Princess, and a rather entitled thief.

This production invites the audience to consider that perhaps the man we called a villain was simply a misunderstood civil servant trying to keep a crumbling city together. With a score that balances heartfelt ballads with side-splitting satire, the show celebrates our collective nostalgia while poking a bit of well-earned fun at it.

Creative Excellence in Wellington

Under the direction of Kitty Walkden, the production promises impeccable comedic timing and high-energy performances. The musical direction by Amy Minshall ensures the StarKid score hits every soaring note, while choreographer Beth Williams brings a dynamic flair to the stage.

Behind the scenes, the seamless flow of the production is managed by Nat Hodgkiss, ensuring that Ja’Far’s journey from hero to "villain" is as smooth as a magic carpet ride. Given the show’s "raunchy" comedic edge, prospective audience members should note that parental discretion is advised, with a recommended age rating of 14+.

Supporting Local Arts

Established in 1972, TADLOP has been a cornerstone of the Shropshire arts scene for over five decades. While their usual home at the Telford Theatre in Oakengates undergoes renovations, the company has shown remarkable resilience by bringing high-quality theatre to various local venues.

As a registered charity, TADLOP relies heavily on the support of the community and ticket sales to continue providing a platform for local talent. By attending Twisted, theatre-goers are not only in for a night of top-tier entertainment but are also directly contributing to the survival of the local performing arts.

Performance Details

The show runs from Thursday, 16 April to Saturday, 18 April 2026. Evening performances begin at 7.30 pm, with an additional Saturday matinee at 2.30 pm. Tickets are priced at £16 and can be purchased through TicketSource or via the TADLOP website.

Whether you are a die-hard fan of the original animation or simply looking for a comedy that isn't afraid to push the boundaries, Twisted promises to be the must-see theatrical event of the spring.

Grab your tickets early to ensure you don't miss out on the most "villainous" night in Wellington.
