Ludlow prepares for the return of the historic Mayfair

The historic streets of Ludlow are set for a vibrant transformation later this month as the time-honoured Mayfair rolls into town, bringing its signature blend of neon lights, sugary aromas, and adrenaline-pumping thrills.
From 5 pm on Wednesday, 29 April, the town’s familiar stone architecture will provide a stunning backdrop to a celebration that has defined the local spring calendar for generations.
A Family Legacy Continued
The fair remains a deeply personal affair for the organisers, steered by the Wynn family who have fostered a decades-long partnership with the town. Today, the mantle is carried by Edward Danter and his wife, Maxine Wynn, who work tirelessly to balance modern entertainment with the fair's nostalgic roots.
The presence of Carole Wynn ensures the legacy of her late husband, David Wynn, continues to be honoured, his impact on the community is a permanent fixture of the town, marked by the memorial bench in the nearby Castle Gardens.
Thrills, Spills, and Candyfloss
While the fair officially arrives on Wednesday evening, the public can enjoy the festivities from Thursday, 30 April, through to Monday, 4 May. Visitors can expect a mix of contemporary rides and vintage favourites.
The screams of riders on the Oxygen will mingle with the rhythmic clatter of the Waltzers and the timeless music of the traditional carousel. Beyond the mechanical whirl, the air will be thick with the scent of hot doughnuts, toffee apples, and gourmet street food, ensuring that those looking for a more relaxed stroll through the Market Square are equally well-catered for.
The Most Unique Service in Shropshire
Perhaps the most distinctive element of the week is the Mayfair Dodgem Service, scheduled for Sunday, 3 May at 11.30 am. In a tradition that perfectly encapsulates Ludlow’s community spirit, the Bishop’s Chaplain, Revd Jane Plackett-Ferguson, will lead a congregation seated entirely within the dodgem cars.
Accompanied by the Choir of St Laurence’s Church, the service offers a moment of reflection amidst the carnival atmosphere. The Mayor of Ludlow, Cllr Diane Lyle, has extended a warm invitation to all residents to witness this extraordinary event.
Navigating the Festivities
Road closures will be in effect from 5 pm on Wednesday, 29 April until 10 am on Tuesday, 5 May, affecting High Street, Mill Street, Castle Square, and parts of Dinham.
Residents should note that the Castle Street car park will be closed for the duration, and vehicle owners are requested to clear Mill Street by 4 pm on the opening Wednesday to allow the fairground convoys to manoeuvre safely.
While the regular Ludlow Market will take a brief hiatus from Monday afternoon until 6 May, local commerce remains very much alive. A selection of essential traders, including Lee’s Farm Shop and Evans Family Butchers, will continue to serve the public from under the Buttercross on select days throughout the bank holiday period.
"The Mayfair is one of Ludlow’s most loved traditions, bringing colour, energy and a sense of shared celebration to the town," says Town Council Clerk Gina Wilding. "We thank residents, traders and visitors for their cooperation during the temporary changes and look forward to welcoming everyone."
