London Can Take It: A Wartime Blitz and Evacuation Memoir by Valerie Braunston, a former Ludlow resident, has been published to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Ludlow resident's wartime memoir unearthed

In 1939, Valerie and her family hoped the war would pass them by in the quiet neighbourhood of Bush Hill Park, Enfield. But as the Blitz began, her carefree childhood became a daily fight for survival.

Valerie endured air raids, rationing and a fractured education while London was battered for eight relentless months. By 1944, V-1 and V-2 rockets forced her evacuation to a pig farm in Lincolnshire, but she quickly plotted her return to London to pursue her dream of becoming an actress.

Valerie retired to Ludlow with her husband Jack Bingham in 1989, she was a well-known figure in the community, often sharing her wartime stories. At the age of 88, Valerie moved into care with deteriorating health, while clearing out her house her son Miles found a manuscript beside a jammed-up typewriter, it captured her memories of wartime, infused with her humour and resilience.

Valerie recently passed away, her poignant story of life on the Home Front during World War II remains one of the last voices of that generation, revealing the enduring strength of the human spirit during one of history's darkest times.

Her son, Miles Bingham, describes finding the manuscript as "like opening a time capsule." He recalls his mother's frequent retellings of her wartime experiences and expresses the profound significance of seeing her work published on this important anniversary. "She's one of the last voices of that generation," he adds.

"London Can Take It" is a testament to resilience and a captivating journey back to the Home Front. This powerful memoir ensures her voice and the memories of that era continue to resonate with readers.
