Police have arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of arson following a fire at an address in Shrewsbury.

Man Arrested on Suspicion of Arson following Herongate Fire

The fire in the entranceway of a house in Reedham Road, on the Herongate estate, was reported to police by Shropshire Fire and Rescue shortly after 11pm on Wednesday.

A coat has reportedly been set alight, causing over £100 worth of damage to the door. It was quickly dealt with by the fire service and nobody was injured.

Following a police search, the teenager was arrested a short time later and taken into custody at Shrewsbury Police Station. He has since been interviewed and released on police bail pending further enquiries.

There have been a series of suspected arson attacks on the estate over the past few weeks, into which the police investigation is ongoing. Three previous arrests have been made and the men concerned released on police bail.

Detective Sergeant Andy Chatting, from Shrewsbury CID, appealed for anyone who may have witnessed persons acting suspiciously in the Reedham Road area that night to contact police on 0300 333 3000.

“Police continue to actively investigate the series of arson attacks that have taken place in the Herongate area over the past couple of months,” he said.

“Although this is the first incident for some time, we wish to reassure residents by continuing with regular patrols of the area and appealing for the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police on 0300 333 3000.”
