Further snow fell in Shropshire overnight, causing problems on Shropshire’s roads.

Fresh Snow causes further problems in Shropshire

The north, west and southern areas of Shropshire were worst hit by the fresh snow fall.

West Mercia Police are asking drivers to take extra care on the roads and only make a journey if absolutely necessary.

Despite Shropshire Council gritting last night lorries became stuck on the A49 north of Hadnall.

West Midlands Ambulance Service is also asking people to think before dialling 999. The service say due to the cold weather calls yesterday were up by over 40% compared to last Friday which was already an incredibly busy day.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “A huge number of these calls are reports of slips, trips and falls as people venture out into the snow and onto icy conditions. Clearly many of these could have been avoided if the journey was not essential.”

Housholds expecting post could fail in receiving their deliveries for a second day in Shropshire, after Royal Mail yesterday put a blanket ban on deliveries from the Shrewsbury sorting office.

The Met Office are forecasting further snow showers sometimes, leading to further accumulations of snow. Additionally, there will be a continuing risk of widespread ice on untreated surfaces.

On Sunday there is the potential for further of snow to move across Shropshire, giving additional accumulations. Although the Met Office say there is considerable uncertainty about the extent and depth of any snow.

Elsewhere across the UK the weather has been causing problems on the roads, rails and at the UK’s busiest airports. Hundreds of drivers were trapped in their vehicles on the M6 overnight and Heathrow airport is closed until 5pm on this afternoon. Gatwick also has problems with cancelled flights.

Around 4 million Christmas parcels from online retailers including Amazon and play.com are currently waiting for deliveries across the UK. Online shoppers are being told its now too late to order in time for Christmas.
