A soldier from 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment based at Tern Hill barracks in Shropshire was killed in Afghanistan yesterday.

The soldier died as a result of an operational accident that is now under investigation.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Eastman, said:

"It is my sad duty to report the loss of a soldier from 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment this morning.

"The soldier was operating in the Nad-e Ali District of central Helmand Province when he died as a result of an operational accident, which is currently under investigation.

"He has forfeited his life for the greater good, bringing hope to a people struggling to live their daily lives in peace – his place in our thoughts is assured. Our heartfelt condolences are with his family and friends at this time of great loss."

The soldier's next of kin have been informed and asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
