CCTV in Shrewsbury town centre is being examined after a teenage boy was assaulted by two youths on Saturday afternoon.

Teenager assaulted in Shrewsbury town centre

The boy was walking along Claremont Street with his girlfriend between about 1.45pm and 2pm on Saturday when the offenders, both white males in their late teens, began to shout abuse at them outside Argos.

When the victim challenged their behaviour, he was assaulted and punched several times to the face, before the offenders made off. He suffered bruising and swelling to his face but did not need hospital treatment.

Police Constable Ben Oakley, who is investigating the assault, said someone must have seen it take place.

“This happened on Saturday afternoon, one of the busiest shopping times in Shrewsbury so there would have been a lot of people in the area,” he said.

“Someone must have seen what happened and I would ask them to please contact police on 0300 333 3000.

“CCTV from the town centre is also being examined in an attempt to identify the offenders.”

Both offenders were white and of stocky build. One had very short or shaved fair hair and was wearing jeans, a green hooded top and white trainers. The second had very short or shaved brown hair and was also in jeans and trainers, although he was wearing a grey and white hooded top.

Anyone who witnessed the assault or knows the identity of those involved is asked to contact police on 0300 333 3000.

Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where a reward is sometimes offered.
