Police Praise Shrewsbury and Port Vale supporters
Police today praised Shrewsbury and Port Vale supporters following last night’s trouble-free local derby.
An intelligence-led policing operation was mounted in case trouble flared before, during or after the game which attracted a bumper crowd of almost 6,500.
The operation’s commander, Chief Inspector David McWilliam said the match passed without incident.
“Together with Shrewsbury Town football club, we were well prepared to deal with any disturbance, but I’m pleased to say there was no disorder and no arrests.
“It was a large crowd and with it being a local derby there was potential for public order incidents. But the fans deserve praise because there were no reports of misbehaviour.
“It was an excellent example of an enjoyable sporting spectacle where people, including family groups, were able to attend without fear of being caught up in disorder.”
Chief Inspector McWilliam added that club stewards were on duty inside the ground while police officers maintained a presence in the town and the stadium surrounds before and after the match.
