Hundreds of mourners expected to attend Officer’s funeral

Several hundred people are today expected to attend the funeral of a police dog handler who died earlier this month.

The funeral of Sergeant Ian Jones, who died suddenly on 2nd March is being held in Much Wenlock.

Those in or passing through the town during this afternoon are asked to be aware that, as for any large funeral, there may be some congestion for a short time.

Police are working to keep any disruption to a minimum but drivers in particular may face some short delays as the funeral cortege travels to Holy Trinity Church, Wilmore Street for the service at 2pm, before travelling to another local church for a private burial.

Arrangements for off-road parking have been put in place, although these spaces are limited and guests have been asked to travel together where possible.

The cortege will be headed by a police motorcyclist, which will lead the cars from Sergeant Jones’ home in a village outside the town, along the B4378 and to the church.

The town centre is not expected to be affected.

Sergeant Jones’ family, friends and colleagues thank the public in advance for their understanding and patience.
