Police have released images of two women they are seeking to trace following an incident of theft in Wellington.

CCTV footage released following cash theft in Wellington

An elderly man was shopping in Wellington town centre when the incident happened on the morning of January 20. The man, who is aged in his late 60’s, had visited the Halifax bank and withdrew a substantial amount of cash and put it into his bag.

He continued shopping in the town centre and visited various shops including Wilkinsons and Dunelm. He later noticed that the money was missing and contacted police.

Police have been examining CCTV and are eager to speak to the two women pictured. It is believed the two women may have information that could help police with their investigation.

A Telford Police spokeswoman said: “The two women in the CCTV pictures were in the vicinity when the incident happened and we are hoping that they may have information that could help us.

“The victim had put the money he had withdrawn securely in his bag and had fastened the zips within.

“As he continued shopping he realised that the zips were undone and the money was missing. It was at that point he realised it had been stolen.

“The victim has told police that he was distracted at least two times while he shopped in Wellington, first in the market and then inside a shop.

Police are hoping that they may have information that could help.

“On one occasion a woman asked him for information about a product. The victim explained he didn’t work there and they both went their separate ways. It was shortly after this incident that the man discovered his money missing.”

The spokeswoman added: “The town centre would have been very busy that morning and we are eager to speak to these two women in particular.

“If this is you, or you know who they are, please come forward and speak to us.

“The victim was extremely upset and we are eager to catch those responsible.”

Information should be passed to Telford Police on 0300 333 3000.
