Police are appealing for witnesses after a gang of youths broke into a Market Drayton takeaway, making off with the till and cans of soft drinks.

The culprits ran through the town, throwing cans of drink at each other and attempting to open the till.

Officers investigating the break-in at Zilans Takeaway in High Street during the early hours of yesterday are hoping members of the public who spotted the offenders will come forward with information to help identify them.

Police Constable Clare Stretton said today: “The burglary happened between 1.25am and 1.35am yesterday when a gang of six youths smashed the two front doors of the takeaway, gained entry and stole the till and a case of Seven Up drink cans.

“They then fled the premises, running across the Square into Queen Street, throwing cans at each other and trying to smash open the till. They then went through an alleyway onto Cheshire Street and cut straight across under the archway to the Frogmore Road car park.”

PC Stretton said the streets were busy with people at the time and urged anyone who spotted the group to call Market Drayton police station on 0300-333-3000 asking for her or PC Richard Mantle.

“We would also welcome information from anyone who knows who the offenders are. Details can also be given to the anonymous Crimestoppers number, 0800-555-111, for which a reward may be paid,” she added.
