Tributes have today been paid to former Shrewsbury councillor and Mayor Eileen Sandford MBE who has died aged 88.

Tributes paid to former Shrewsbury mayor and councillor

A Shrewsbury borough and Shropshire county councillor for 26 years from 1983 until 2009 and former Mayor of Shrewsbury, Eileen was awarded an MBE for her services in 2004.

Eileen served as Conservative county and local councillor for the Harlescott area, she was always up for a challenge and had an energetic outlook on life.

Like thousands of others Eileen liked to raise money for worthy causes in the community. Eileen regularly liked a challenge taking part in swimming, skate-boarded and evening abseiling from the top of the world’s tallest Doric Column – Lord Hill’s Column in Shrewsbury for charity.

Last year the 88-year-old wrote her autobiography "Come On, Eileen!". The book is packed full of stories, photos, reminiscences as is only right for someone who has made such a massive contribution to local life.
