The second Shrewsbury Town Council Mayor of Shrewsbury Awards were held at the Guildhall in Shrewsbury last night.

Shrewsbury Mayor hosts awards evening

Local residents, businesses and community organisations were invited to the presentation evening hosted by the Mayor Councillor Kathleen Owen and Shrewsbury Town Council.

Over 100 people attended the ceremony with over 40 awards being handed out.

Nominations were invited in a variety of categories and were open to anyone whose achievements have benefitted the town of Shrewsbury.

The business award category acknowledged the work of businesses, organisations and individuals who have contributed to the economy of the town, whether through providing job opportunities, business expansion or general promotion and marketing of the town. The overall winner of the category was Evans Easyspace, who provides offices, meeting rooms, workshops, serviced offices, virtual offices and storage units in Battlefield.

In the community award category a number of organisations, business and individuals were recognised for their work in Shrewsbury. The overall award for the category went to Olwen Abbot.

The youth award recognised The Hive Music and Media Centre for its contribution to the well-being of young people within the town.

The winner of the Environmental Award went to Stan Sedman for his part in contributing to enhancing the environment of Shrewsbury.

The Mayor, Councillor Kath Owen, also presented her special commendation awards to those she had met throughout her Mayoral Year and had made a difference to the town.

A special mention was given to Eileen Sandford MBE who passed away last week. Eileen was Mayor of Shrewsbury in 2004 and devoted her life to helping those less fortunate than herself and championing causes she believed in.

Eileen had nominated a number of people for awards at last night’s ceremony and had apparently commented when submitting the nominations that it was her final thank you.
