Greg Rusedski to open Telford’s new tennis centre
Telford & Wrekin borough’s new tennis centre is to be officially opened on June 15 by former British number one tennis star Greg Rusedski. The grand opening coincides with the start of the 2011 Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships.

The Telford Tennis Centre, which is located at Oakengates Leisure Centre, opened its doors last month and is a fantastic addition to the leisure services on offer in the borough.
Greg and other dignitaries will officially unveil a plaque at the new tennis facility and all courts and taster coaching sessions will be free to the public from 12.30pm – they may even get the chance to play with the tennis star himself.
Greg Rusedski is a former US Open finalist and at the peak of his 16 year professional tennis career was number four in the world. He also won BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
The event on June 15 will be hosted by BBC Radio Shropshire presenter Eric Smith and will feature dancers from the Sutherland Business and Enterprise College as well as Wimbledon themed entertainment.
Stuart Davidson, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Leisure Services Delivery Manager said: “I am delighted that such a well known international star as Greg Rusedski is coming to Telford to open our new tennis centre and it promises to be a fantastic day for the borough.
“Tennis is never more in the public eye in this country than when the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships are taking place and so we feel it is perfect timing to have our official opening when they are starting.
“The new centre aims to make tennis more accessible for all ages and abilities and we are looking forward to showing it to a great player like Greg Rusedski.”
Information on the coaching and competition programme provided by Firstpoint Tennis Coaching will be available for everyone who attends the event.
The new £2.2m eight court indoor and outdoor tennis centre is at the Oakengates Leisure Centre site which also has a swimming pool, Aspirations fitness suite, a sports hall, football pitches, floodlit artificial pitch and an athletics track as well as changing facilities.
