National Volunteers week celebrated in Shropshire

Staff from Oswestry Community Action (Cube) and the Community Council of Shropshire who together form the ‘Shropshire Infrastructure Partnership Volunteering Team’ are gearing up for several events throughout the county to promote volunteering and to recognise and celebrate the difference Shropshire volunteers make.

It is estimated that 32.2% of people in Shropshire take part in regular volunteering compared to the national average of 23.2%. Steve Jones, volunteer co-ordinator for the partnership said: ‘These events are an opportunity to celebrate the commitment, patience and generosity of Shropshire volunteers and to showcase the variety of areas volunteers get involved in’.

The week will be kicked off by two simultaneous volunteering fairs; in the Square in Shrewsbury 10.00am till 3.00pm and Wem Town Hall 8.30am till 12 o clock on Thursday 2nd June. A similar event will be held at Whitchurch Farmers Market on Saturday 4th June from 8.30am till 12 o clock and in the Square in Ludlow on Monday 6th June from 10.00am till 3.00pm.

These events will showcase volunteering opportunities across Shropshire, so come along a find out how you can help your local communities.

A celebration picnic, complete with face painters, jugglers and balloon modellers, will take place on Saturday 4th June at Shrewsbury Quarry. Sabrina Brass Band will be playing in the Bandstand from 1pm – 3pm. Organisations and voluntary groups are invited to put their volunteers forward for Thank You certificates which will be presented by The High Sheriff of Shropshire Mr Richard Burbidge OBE,DL, BA.
