An 87-year-old Shropshire man who was assaulted by two men who broke into his home a month ago, has died in hospital.

Mr Charles Green, of Ambleside Road, Oswestry, died in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital early today.

He had remained in hospital following the assault during the early hours of May 2, having received head, hip and arm injuries.

Two men were arrested by police later the same day in connection with the incident.

A 25-year-old has since been charged with entering Mr Green’s home as a trespasser and subjecting him to violence. He appeared before Shrewsbury Crown Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody until July.

A 23-year-old man is currently on police bail pending further inquiries.

Detective Inspector Mick Homden, the investigating officer, said today: “I can confirm Mr Green, sadly passed away in hospital last night.

“A post mortem is now being arranged, to be conducted by a Home Office pathologist, to determine the cause of death.

“Our investigation into the incident has been ongoing and further inquiries will now be carried out.”

He renewed the appeal for information which might help the police investigation. “The incident happened at around 2.45am on May 2 when Mr Green awoke to find two men in his house.

“I appeal to local people in the Ambleside Road area to cast their minds back to the early hours of May 2, the Bank Holiday Monday, and if they recall seeing anything suspicious which could be connected to the incident, to please contact Oswestry CID on 0300-333-3000 as a matter of urgency”.
