Councillor Mike Ion, new member for College ward in Wellington, has been invited to speak at the annual meeting of the Progressive Muslim Forum which is being held on June 15.

Mr Ion is the National Director of the Best Practice Network and a former deputy head teacher of the Blessed Robert Johnson Catholic College in Wellington.

He plans to use the forum to speak about the challenges facing the English education system in terms of ensuring both equity and excellence for all children.

Councillor Ion said: “I feel passionately that a quality education needs to be accessible to all children and am committed to promoting that message.

“I am honoured to have been invited to address the Progressive Muslim Forum and see it as an excellent opportunity to further develop close relations with the Muslim Community.”

Councillor Ion has already forged close links with faith community leaders in his ward area after a series of positive meetings since the election at the start of last month.

Other speakers at the event include Lord Jim Knight, Tarique Ghaffur and Niall Dickson, from the Kings Fund.
