A team of 5 cyclists from No 705 Naval Air Squadron at the Defence Helicopter Flying School, RAF Shawbury, in north Shropshire, are approaching half way on a long distance bike ride to visit 20 Fleet Air Arm sites en-route and raise funds for the Royal British Legion.

705 Naval Air Squadron cyclists hit half way on 100 mile bike ride

The team began the epic journey at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, in Cornwall on Friday 3 June and have now covered close on half of the intended aim to cover 1000 miles in 10 days. The team will depart Gloucester on Wednesday 8 June and ride to their home base at Shawbury, arriving late evening. On Thursday morning the team will fund raise at the main gate at Shawbury before departure at 0800.

To date the team have visited Royal Navy Air Stations Culdrose, St Merryn, Treigga, Roborough, Haldon, Yeovilton, Portland and Sandbanks

The event is designed to give the team an insight into the history of the airfields they will be visiting whilst raising awareness of the Fleet Air Arm and the Royal British Legion. The team will be more than willing to meet veterans or news teams as they progress on their endeavour. Anyone wishing to sponsor the team can do so at http://www.justgiving.com/705-Naval-Air-Squadron---Charity-Cycle-Ride-2-13-June-2011

All of the team members are Qualified Helicopter Instructors at the Defence Helicopter Flying School. As such they are responsible for the training of all Military Helicopter pilots for all 3 services. Many of them have previously served in was zones across the globe.
