Telford Ski Club has received a national award in recognition of its development and racing achievements last season.

National Recognition for Telford Ski Club

Thirty two club members were present to receive the award, which was presented by Snowsport England, the National Governing Body for the sport.

This is the first year Snowsport England has presented awards to its clubs and volunteers in recognition of their hard work, commitment and achievements.

The Telford Ski Club is based at Telford Snowboard and Ski Centre. Telford Snowboard and Ski Centre is managed by the Telford Trust. The Ski Club has grown in numbers and ability since it started in 1968. In 2011, the Club had five members in the Great Britain Children’s team, which has a total squad of 24, and eight athletes appearing for the England Dry Slope Team.

These are just two examples of the success the club has had in the last season alone. The Club’s ability to produce award-winning alpine ski racers is reflected in their impressive track record being the only club in the country that can claim to have achieved at least one podium position at every single competition in the 2010 season!

The club is ‘home-grown’ with the majority of members drawn from within Telford and Wrekin, rather then adopting nationwide recruitment.

Through its highly qualified instructors and willing volunteers, Telford Ski Club provides high quality ski racing coaching on all surfaces. Its racers compete at all levels, including regional, national and international competitions.

In addition to hosting its own Club National event, Telford Ski Club also organised one leg of the Snowsport England Grand Prix Series in 2010.

This was an extremely successful event which boasted the largest start list of any Grand Prix in 2010 and showcased the effective way in which the Club and Telford Snowboard & Ski Centre organises and runs major ski racing events.

Darren Fellows, Chairman of the Telford Ski Club said: “To receive this award is a fantastic accomplishment which has been generated through a combination of athlete hunger and desire, a quality of coaching that we believe is second to none in the UK, and strong support from our volunteers and parents which is essential for every club and every athlete to succeed.”

Cllr Arnold England, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Leisure at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “This is an outstanding achievement for our local ski club, which needs a very long mantelpiece to house all its awards! This club, with its exceptionally talented athletes thoroughly deserves this award. Well done to everyone concerned.

“What better time than now to be part of this team. If you are interested in joining the Telford Ski Club visit www.telfordskiclub.co.uk Fill YOUR mantelpiece!”

Alan MacKenzie, Chair of Telford Trust, said: “The ski slope is a fantastic asset for Telford & Wrekin and I am delighted the club is receiving such great recognition for its achievements. I want to congratulate everyone involved and I look forward to Telford one day being represented at the winter Olympics.”
