Biker skills and safety day organised in Shrewsbury

Thousands of people are expected to attend one of the first large-scale motorbike and fun days in Shropshire, where some of the country’s best stunt bikers are set to wow the crowds.

The Rider Skills and Family Fun Day, which will be held at the Greenhouse Meadow Stadium in Shrewsbury between 10am and 4pm on Sunday 26th June, has been organised by the Shropshire Motorcycle Road Safety Group, made up representatives from the police, Shropshire Council, Safer Roads Partnership and the fire service.

Police Constable Mick Sturland, one of the main organisers of the day, said its main aim was to educate riders of all levels as to the benefit of advanced training and safe use of the roads when out on their bikes.

There will be free assessment rides from the Institute of Advanced Motorists and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), along with ‘have a go’ sessions for those new to riding or who want to see if it is for them.

“Motorbike dealers from all the major manufacturers will be there, alongside trade stalls, live bands and stunt shows,” said PC Sturland.

“We also have some fantastic stunt shows from the likes of Chesca Miles, the UK’s number one female stunt rider, extreme mountain-biker Danny Butler and a display from Piston Rings Youth Motorcycle Club. There is also plenty to do for the younger bike nuts, including a bouncy castle, bungee run, climbing wall and face painting.”

The event is free although there will be a prize draw on the day to raise money for Midlands Air Ambulance and the ongoing operation and maintenance of the Shropshire Road Safety Outreach Vehicle.

The Outreach van is operated by the local police and RoSPA and is used across the county to get across road safety messages.

It even contains a motorcycle involved in a fatal crash near Bridgnorth some years ago to illustrate how vulnerable bikers really are.
