Hospital consultant takes on the Three Peaks Challenge
A consultant from The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust will be aiming to scale Britain’s highest mountains in just 24 hours to raise funds and awareness for charity.
Dr Jane Panikkar, a Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, will be taking on the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge on 29 July 2011.
This involves climbing the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon) in one day.
Dr Panikkar is hoping to complete the challenge to raise vital funds and awareness for the Practical Help Achieving Self Empowerment (PHASE) Worldwide Colposcopy Group, which is one of the organisation’s many projects that works with doctors and nurses in Nepal to try and reduce the burden of cervical cancer.
This is a project she has been heavily involved in by travelling to Nepal to help develop screening and diagnostic clinics there, and also by inviting medical staff over to Shropshire for training that can help to reduce the number of people dying from cancer in their Himalayan communities.
Dr Panikkar said: “We really want to do something to bring PHASE to people’s attention, and to help raise funds to support this important work.
“By helping to establish effective screening and facilities for colposcopy in Nepal, hopefully we can help to start addressing the problems they have there. Screening does not detect and prevent all cancers, but sadly the biggest risk of getting cancer of the cervix and dying is not attending screening and colposcopy clinics.
“This is going to be a demanding challenge, but I am looking forward to it.”
