The cost of parking in Council in pay and display car parks in Telford and Wrekin is set to change on 9 July 2011 as part of the Council’s budget proposals.

Telford & Wrekin Council car parking charges set to change

The changes only relate to Council car parks where charges are already made. The increases have been kept to a minimum and range from 10 pence to 40 pence.

83% of all council managed car parking spaces remain free, totalling just over 2,000 spaces in the borough.

The changes will affect 128 car parking spaces in the Town Centre car parks at Southwater Way and near the Ice Rink and 270 spaces in five car parks in Ironbridge.

The maximum increase in Telford town centre is 40p for stays over 4 hours and the new charges are comparable with charges made by other car park operators in the town centre.

In Ironbridge the maximum charge is increasing by 20p to £1.40 for an all day stay. This compares favourably with many other similar tourist destinations and is in line with charges made on the Ironbridge Gorge museum car parks.

Cllr Hilda Rhodes, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport & Community Protection, said: “We recognise that car parking price increases will not be popular and have kept them to a minimum. The changes were approved in March following public consultation through the Council’s budget setting process and reflect the increasing maintenance costs associated with managing car parks.”
