A dedicated local police officer has became the first pillar of the community to be recognised by Telford & Wrekin Council’s new leader at the borough’s regular full council meeting.

Dedicated Telford police officer recognised by council leader

Council leader Kuldip Sahota plans to pay tribute to individuals for their sterling contribution to life in Telford and Wrekin at each meeting of the council, which happens roughly every six weeks.

The first person to receive words of praise was Sergeant Louis Hylton, who spent years making the neighbourhood he serves a safer place to live.

Sergeant Hylton has just been made an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, receiving the honour for services to policing and the community.

The honour was specifically in recognition of Sergeant Hylton’s work in tackling anti social behaviour and the significant difference he has made to the engagement between the police service and the community during his 23 years of service.

At last night’s full council meeting, Councillor Sahota praised Sergeant Hylton’s contribution to the community.

“It is very easy for the contribution of people like Sergeant Hylton to be taken for granted or overlooked,” said Councillor Sahota.

“But the honour he has received from Queen clearly demonstrates that his contribution has been above and beyond the natural call of duty and I would like to add my congratulations and warmest respect for his efforts during a sparkling police career.

“I am determined that the hard work and commitment of the residents of Telford and Wrekin will not go unnoticed while I am leader of this council and I plan to recognise the contribution that people make at each full council meeting.”

Sergeant Hylton is currently based at Madeley Police Station and has worked closely with partner agencies and local residents to tackle anti social behaviour by encouraging a pro-active approach by his officers and members of the Special Constabulary.

He has led a number of initiatives and has fully engaged with the community he serves through holding residents’ meetings, putting out information in local parish magazines and through leaflet drops.

When arrests are necessary in his local policing area, Sergeant Hylton always makes a concerted effort to be involved and has led the execution of warrants for theft and drug offences, helping to provide community reassurance.

Sergeant Hylton has also shown skills in supporting and developing student police officers, Community Support Officers and newly appointed Special Constables, including developing training initiatives.
