A major maintenance programme to improve roads across the borough of Telford & Wrekin gets underway from today.

Telford & Wrekin Council has identified the state of the borough roads as a major priority and is investing to improve carriageways across Telford and Wrekin.

A series of road improvements will take place over the summer as part of this extensive programme.

One of the first areas to benefit will be Arleston Lane where work starts today to upgrade the road surface and will involve a series of road closures.

Contractors have identified five phases as part of the Arleston Lane road improvement programme so that road closures can be kept to a minimum.

Cllr Hilda Rhodes, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport & Community Protection said: “Improving carriageways across the Borough is a priority for Telford & Wrekin Council and serious investment is needed to improve the state of the roads across the borough. That’s why we plan to address this in our special budget that will be announced later this summer.

“I appreciate that road closures are not popular and may cause some inconvenience however I hope residents will understand that they are necessary to improve the quality of roads across the borough.”

Phase 1 of the Arleston Lane road works will take place from the Buck’s Head junction to south of Woollam Road junction. Within this phase, work from the Buck’s Head junction to Arleston Court (Windsor Flats) will be undertaken on a Sunday (Phase 1A).

Phase 2 will continue on from Phase 1 as far as Lidgates Green. Access to Manor Rise will be managed by the Contractor during this phase of works and access to Lidgates Green and Arleston Inn will be from the A5223 Lawley from the south.

Phase 3 will continue from the M54 underpass to Arleston Inn. Any traffic to the Inn will be re-directed from the A5223 Lawley from the south.

Phase 4 will continue from the Inn to north of the property Bella Vista with access to the Inn coming from the Buck’s Head.

The contractor may open the road in the evenings when it is safe to do so. A diversion route will be signed along Bennetts Bank, Whitchurch Drive and Lawley Drive, A5223 to Newdale Roundabout.

Access will be maintained for businesses within the road closure and contractors (Bentleys) will give local businesses and residents information and contact numbers so that any special access requirements can be arranged.

The contractors will communicate any changes in the schedule to local residents.
