Telford STARS has been chosen as Sainsbury’s Telford new local charity partner for 2011/2012. The announcement comes after the store asked Telford customers which local charity they should support. Customers were able to vote for their favourite local charity between 4th and 25th May.

Telford STARS, run by children’s charity Action for Children, works to offer short breaks to children and young people with a range of disabilities and additional needs. Telford STARS aim is to ensure that all children with disabilities in Telford and Wrekin are given the choice to access appropriate high quality short breaks, both respite and outreach, to maximise their potential and improve the quality of life for them and their families. It was chosen as the store’s charity after nominations poured in from customers keen to support a local good cause. Over the next 12 months, the charity will benefit from money donated through fundraising as well as volunteering.

Dorine Rai of Telford STARS said: “We’re really excited to be partnering with Sainsbury’s Telford over the next 12 months and would like to thank everyone in the community who voted for us. Action for Children’s work across the UK makes a real difference to the lives of thousands of children and young people, as well as their families. At Telford STARS, we currently support 34 young people with very complex needs and give them the opportunity to enjoy a range of fun activities and days out, while giving their families a break from their, often very challenging, caring duties.

“We will be planning fundraising activities with the store colleagues in the coming weeks and we hope that customers will support the store’s fundraising efforts in the coming months. All money raised will make a huge difference to the young people we support.”

The store plan to launch the partnership with Telford STARS by holding a Wimbledon weekend where the staff are invited to dress up and there will be a DVD and CD sale from Friday 1st July till Sunday 3rd July 2011

Ian Sutton, Sainsbury’s Telford store manager, added: “Telford STARS is such a worthy local cause and we’re pleased and proud to be supporting it over the next 12 months. We’ll be letting our customers know of our fundraising plans and we hope they can join our colleagues in helping to support them”.
