Schools and services disrupted as strike action takes place in Shropshire

More than 70 schools in Shropshire are affected by strike action today as teacher's and civil servants from across the county join national strike action over pension changes.

Schools in the Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin council areas are today closed completely or facing disruption to certain years or classes. Shropshire job centres, driving test centres and courts also face disruption.

Civilian defence workers responsible for specialist training and administration will also be picketing outside Copthorne Barracks in Shrewsbury, MoD Donnington and RAF Cosford.

Unions claim proposed changes to public sector pensions will mean they will have to work longer, pay more and get less when they retire.

The government has condemned the strikes as counterproductive.

Business secretary, Vince Cable, warned teachers, jobcentre workers and immigration officials that there will be no public sympathy for the walkouts.

At 12.30pm rally’s are set to take place at Cordingley Hall in Donnington and The Unison Club at Shirehall in Shrewsbury.

Up to 750,000 workers are expected to strike nationally.
