Work starts on Telford Town Park visitor centre
Work to build a new visitor centre in Telford Town Park will start today as part of the £250 million redevelopment of the area.
The new visitor centre replaces Spout Farm House and is an exciting new facility based on sustainable design and low energy consumption.
Contractors, Wygar Construction have been awarded the contract to build the new centre which is expected to be open by the end of the year.
The new visitor centre is located next to the old chapel and includes opportunities for bike hire as well as educational facilities for school groups.
Cllr Charles Smith, Cabinet Member for Regeneration said: “It is fantastic that work is underway to build the new visitor centre in Telford Town Park. Telford Town Park is a unique selling point for the Borough and the centre will complement the Southwater regeneration work that will transform the southwater area of Telford.
“The regeneration work is an exciting project for the area and I’m looking forward to working closely with the Homes and Communities Agency and Private Sector partners to deliver the scheme in the years to come.”
The new visitor centre supports the £3.4m Parks for the People lottery grant to improve the park. The new centre is based on a bird-inspired design in keeping with the natural environment of the park and wildlife which it supports.
The Southwater development is a partnership between Telford & Wrekin Council and the Homes and Communities Agency, in conjunction with private sector partners including Southwater Event Group and Hark. The new development will include retail, residential and leisure units as well as a restaurant, bars and office space.
