Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin council awarded sustainable transport funding
Both Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Council were today awarded amounts by the Department for Transport following a successful bid to the DfT’s new Local Sustainable Transport Fund.
Shropshire Council’s bid for £4.99million was one of 34 (out of the 73 bids submitted) which have been awarded full funding over the period 2011-15.
Telford & Wrekin Council will receive £3.5m but is still waiting to hear the detail of which elements of the bid have been successful and will be announcing more information in due course.
Shropshire Council say their money money will be spent on a wide range of measures which meet the objectives of supporting and boosting the local economy, and cutting carbon emissions.
Shropshire Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport, said:
“This is fantastic news for Shropshire Council but, most importantly, it’s great news for the people of Shropshire. The success of our bid is recognition of the excellent work already being done by the council and our partners, to encourage people to reduce their car use, with the resulting financial, health and environmental benefits that this brings. I look forward to announcing exactly how the funding will be spent as soon as we can.”
Telford & Wrekin Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for Transport, Environment and Community Protection, said:
“We received news that our bid to the Local Sustainable Transport Fund has been successful earlier today although we are still waiting to receive details of exactly which projects the money will fund.
“Obviously this is very welcome and demonstrates the quality of the bid that we submitted. It will all be used to make Telford and Wrekin an even more pleasant and sustainable environment to live and work in.”
