Staff at Shropshire Council today received dismissal letters following an ongoing dispute over a proposed 5.4% pay cut.

Shropshire Council staff receive dismissal letters

Around 6,500 employees received the letter which states that all council staff will be dismissed on September 30 and immediately rehired on 1 October if they agree to the new terms and take a 5.4% pay cut.

Staff who do not accept the pay cut will be dismissed without compensation.

Shropshire Council need to save £76m due to reduced funding from the Government.

The council hopes the pay cuts would avoid the redundancy of up to 500 staff.

The dismissal letter was issued after the council and Unison, of which 40% of council employees are members, failed to reach agreement over changes to the pay and staff conditions.
