Local cultural and arts groups are being offered a supporting hand from The Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Cultural Consortium.

Local cultural and arts groups offered supporting hand

The group is calling on local arts groups to get in touch if they want help accessing funding or advice to help their organisation grow during tough economic times.

Since the launch of a new cultural strategy in September the Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Cultural Consortium has helped promote culture, leisure and tourism of the region.

As part of the new cultural strategy, Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin Council have made a commitment to maximise the area’s reputation to ensure that residents and visitors recognise Shropshire’s high quality cultural experiences.

The group now wants to create ‘cultural advocates’ for the county who can provide high quality sporting and cultural activities to encourage visitors to return to the area.

Cllr Arnold England, Cabinet Member for Leisure & Well-Being said: “Despite the difficult economic situation, we are very proud of the high quality cultural provision in the Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin area, from wonderful theatres to excellent country parks and from world-class sporting facilities to exciting festivals and events.

“We want to hear from local arts and culture groups who want find out how best to access funding or support to help their organisation grow. This is particularly relevant amidst tough economic times when budgets are stretched.”

Cultural Consortium Chair and CEO at the Ironbridge Gorge Museums Steve Miller added “We are able to provide visitors to the area with some outstanding cultural facilities including the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site and, of course, Much Wenlock, birthplace of the modern Olympic movement”.

The Consortium was set up to promote the cultural industries and tourism, regionally and nationally and to create opportunities for economic growth in this sector.

The Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Cultural Consortium includes representatives from Telford & Wrekin Council, Shropshire Council and the voluntary sector.

Anyone wanting to contact the Consortium can do so through Psyche Hudson, Arts & Culture Service Manager, Telford & Wrekin Council psyche.hudson@telford.gov.uk or by phone on 01952 382362.
