Telford & Wrekin Council has laid down a new challenge for the residents of Wellington – ahead of the completion of the town’s £8.5m regeneration.

Council lays down new name challenge for Wellington residents

The council is launching a new consultation which will invite the public to select names for key parts of the new Civic Quarter.

A debate has already taken place on the best name for the new walkway into the new heart of Wellington and this is being extended as part of of this latest consultation.

The council now wants to broaden the debate to include new names for the whole development which is currently being referred to as the Wellington Civic Quarter development. .

The consultation will close on August 20 and residents can submit their ideas and suggestions by emailing civicquarter@telford.gov.uk

Telford & Wrekin Council’s deputy leader Richard Overton, who has special responsibility for the development of Borough Towns, said: “The council’s new administration has already pledged to carry out full and proper consultation with residents whenever it is appropriate and this issue is no exception.

“One of the cornerstones of our Co-operative Council ethos is real tangible engagement and taking heed of people’s views and we are aware that this is a big issue in Wellington.

“This broader consultation will also give the newly elected Wellington Town Council an opportunity to have a fresh debate on the most appropriate names for this very important development for the town.”

The development, which is due for completion in October, will see the existing facilities at Wellington Civic and Leisure Centre extensively refurbished and remodelled.

The same site will also included a brand new register office, a state of the art, modernised library, community meeting rooms, offices and a community cafe.

In the previous debate on a name for the new walkway, the five most popular suggestions were Civic Way, Foundry Way, Larkin Way, Sun Inn Walk and Withering Way.

Other possibilities put forward included Broughton Way, Declaration Walk, Epstein Lane, Foxglove Walk, Guardian’s Walk, Gwendol Way, Gwynne’s Walk, Horner’s Way, Lawson Lane, Pointon Passage, Tanning Way, The Gateway, Veterans’ Way, Woodhall Way and Wrekin Way.

All of these can still be your choice as well as any new ideas you may have.
