Telford & Wrekin Council has warned homeowners that rogue workers are trying to take advantage of current work being done by contractors to repair footways across the borough.

Telford & Wrekin Council warns homeowners of rogue workers

Several residents have had direct approaches from people offering to repair their drives. These workers are claiming to be part of the team from the council’s contractor McPhillips, who are repairing the footway.

“Residents should be aware that no-one from our official contractor will make any approach to repair their drives and that the people who have done so are in no way connected with our contractor,” said Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for Transport, Environment and Community Protection.

“We are aware that several residents in Arleston have had direct calls on the doorstep from people who claim to be part of the contracting team. These people are offering to do repair work to their drives.

“We would advise that people consider the following when having work done round the home:

Always get at least three quotes before agreeing to work.

Consider using a trader from the Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Trader Register (www.traderregister.org.uk . or call 0345 6789000. All members have signed up to a strict Code of Practice and agree to work with Trading Standards in the unlikely event of a dispute.

Always get a written contract and make sure this includes cancellation rights (you are legally entitled to this if work is carried out by a doorstep seller).

You can report concerns about rogue traders or cold-callers to Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.”
