Council announces completion of £7m Sutton Hill regeneration
A £7m regeneration of Sutton Hill’s local centre has been completed by local contractor McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd.
The scheme has seen the construction of two new shops with four flats above, new road links with improved parking arrangements and the acquisition and demolition of 32 outdated properties, which will be replaced by new, high quality housing.
It has been jointly funded by Telford & Wrekin Council and the Homes and Communities Agency and follows a consultation in 2008 when residents said the need for an improved local centre was their top priority for the estate.
They were also consulted on design options before the scheme was submitted for planning approval in 2010.
Councillor Charles Smith, cabinet member for Housing, Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “I am delighted that this extensive scheme to regenerate the centre of Sutton Hill is now completed.
“Telford & Wrekin Council took on board the views of local residents during the original consultation and now everyone can see that we have delivered a new local centre with better facilities which is much easier to get to and from.
“We will also be upgrading the quality of available housing in the centre of Sutton Hill and I am sure this will mean a brighter future for the estate and everyone who lives there.”
As part of the regeneration, children from the local Alexander Fleming Primary School helped to design murals that have been painted on to the wall of the new Premier supermarket.
Young people from the Sutton Hill youth centre have also helped to design a mural that has been painted on to the wall of the hot food takeaway.
“We were very pleased to be asked to be involved in the design of the murals and it was an excellent project for the school. Everyone is very excited with the changes that have been made to the centre of Sutton Hill, it looks much better,” said school head teacher Jan Cousins.
