Police today renewed a witness appeal after the number of vehicle break-ins in an Ellesmere street rose from four to seven.

Police renew appeal over vehicle crime in Ellesmere

Details were issued yesterday of four breakins on parked vehicles in Hillcrest which happened between 4.30am and 5am. Damage and property stolen amounted to several thousand pounds.

Since then, a further three similar offences have been reported believed to have been carried out by the same people at around the same time.

Police Constable Dan Turner, the investigating officer, said: "The total of confirmed theft at Hillcrest now stands at seven. Six of these involved parked car or vans where entry was gained by smashing windows or through doors left unlocked.

"The other incident involved the theft of a specialist dog trailer. One witness has come forward to say they saw two males pushing the trailer out of the driveway and up the street."

PC Turner said three people are thought to be responsible for the crimes and appealed for any information which might assist the police investigation. In particular, he is anxious to hear from anyone who saw a silver Vauxhall Astra van with three people on board in the Hillcrest area between 4am and 5.30am yesterday. The van has black roof bars and was caught on CCTV."

Power tools, a lap top, wallet, Apple iPod Nano and two Tom Tom sat-nav systems were among the items stolen from the vehicles.

PC Turner added: "Drivers should remember to keep their parked vehicles locked at all times and remove any valuables, especially overnight. Wherever possible, anything of value should be taken out of vehicles or at the very least, not left visible.

Further information about vehicle security is available on the West Mercia Police website http://www.westmercia.police.uk.
