New speed enforcement site for Hodnet
A new ‘Community Concern’ speed enforcement site is being launched this week on Shrewsbury Street, Hodnet in Shropshire, by the Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia following concerns raised about the speeds of vehicles using the road and the resulting impact on road safety.
Concerns have been raised by local residents regarding the compliance of the 30mph speed limit through the village to PC Mick Sturland, the local police officer for the area. Residents are particularly concerned about the speeds of vehicles outside the school at drop off and pick up times. Speed data collected by the Safer Roads Partnership in the 30mph zone in the village shows that 64% of vehicles exceed the speed limit and 15% travel above 40mph, highlighting the extend of the problem.
The Safer Roads Partnership will commence enforcement of the 30mph limit on Shrewsbury Street week commencing 1 August 2011. It is hoped that the mobile speed camera (operated from a speed camera van) will encourage greater compliance with the 30mph speed limit and improve the safety of the road for local residents and drivers using the route.
Katy Jenkins of the Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia said: “Local residents have expressed their concerns about the speeds of vehicles travelling in the village in particular past the school at drop off and pick up times. The data we collected shows an enforceable speeding problem and we are launching a new speed enforcement site in direct response to the concerns from local people. We would encourage drivers travelling through the village to slow down and observe the 30mph limit.”
Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for road safety, said: “We are committed to listening to our communities' concerns about speeding and working with our partners to improve road safety. This is one of a range of initiatives, alongside education, training, and improving roads, which are all helping to make the county's roads safer."
